It has been 2 years since we purchased a piece of land, and today our vacation house has become a dream come true!
We are thrilled to introduce to you our Villa in the countryside of the Silver Coast, situated near the picturesque Sao Martinho do Porto Bay.
The Beginning: Acquiring the Land
Two years ago, we embarked on an exciting adventure travelling through Europe. After travelling more than 7000 km and visiting properties in France, Spain and eventually Portugal.
Choosing a plot of land on the Silver Coast was influenced by its perfect weather conditions. Rather than opting for a hot, dry climate, we preferred abundant greenery and stable temperatures all year round, enabling us to enjoy both day and night comfortably without relying on air conditioning (although we do have it for exceptionally hot nights). This realization came to us in Sao Martinho do Porto, where a unique microclimate prevails. We were certain that this was the location we wished to invest in for our future.
Once we saw it, we knew this was the place, (side note) even though you know it still was scary....
After Marc made a deposit, we had a month to consider our decision. On 23 July 2022, we proceeded with the purchase of the land, knowing that there was no going back. It's been exhilarating but well worth it!
Design and Planning: Crafting Our Vision
With the land secured, the real work began. Architects, designers, gardeners and builders collaborated to create a blueprint for our dream holiday home. We envisioned a tranquil oasis where modern comfort meets natural beauty.
Construction: The Art of Building
The sound of diggers, and hammers, the scent of fresh wood from the Eucalyptus forest next to the Villa and the sight of walls rising—construction brought our vision to life. Each detail mattered, from the layout to the colour palette. In some moments getting people to understand our vision was challenging but we saw our dream start to take shape.
Interior Magic: Furnishing and Decorating
Turning mood boards into reality choosing furniture, textiles, decor and spending hours online, exploring Marrakech for fabrics, or crafting my art pieces, each step added a personal touch to the process. This journey of dreaming and planning spanned two years.
We looked for items that matched our style and harmonized effortlessly with the environment. From inviting nooks and sun-filled spaces to colonial-influenced details, our vacation house serves as an ideal retreat for unwinding and indulging in leisure.
Landscaping: Nature’s Embrace
Outside, the garden blossomed with Native plants, mixed with a tropical oasis's hedges the pool, stone pathways, and the private pool transformed the land.
One of the highlights was when the palm tree and olive trees arrived and turned the sandpit into the most beautiful garden.
Offerings: Yoga Class by the Pool

Unveiling: Welcoming our 1st Guests
Finally, the day arrived after unboxing, hanging panels, and artwork—the reveal. A friend came over from Porto to stay a night and be our first guest just a few days before our kids came to visit.
They all marvelled at the beauty we've created. It's been a special time for us to share this with them and we cannot wait to share this with others. This holiday home is no longer just ours: it is a haven for guests.
Beach Bliss: São Martinho do Porto
And then, the beach! São Martinho do Porto, with its crescent bay and golden sands,. You can stroll along the shore, toes sinking into the soft sand, the Atlantic waves whispering secrets. The beachside is an extension of your home with the welcoming Portuguese and other Nationalities that are always happy to give you tips on the local offerings.
Exploring the Silver Coast
Explore the adventures that lie beyond your doorstep, from the Foz do Arelho lagoon to the colossal waves of Nazaré, the bustling local markets with their daily catch, and the medieval charm of Óbidos, just to name a few. With a wide range of sports and activities available, everything is easily accessible in this area.
Hidden beach gems are just around the corner along the coastline from historic Alcobaça to Lisbon's vibrant streets, which is only 1 hour away.
Evening wind down: Villa 8 Silver Coast
Our holiday home, Villa 8 is a sanctuary. The pool invites you for a midnight dip. Whether you work remotely or simply unwind, this oasis of tropical plants and eucalyptus tree forest surroundings is simply bliss.
Culinary Delights: Local Flavors
Exploring over 100 restaurants, you savoured Portuguese cuisine. Fresh seafood, pastéis de nata, and robust wines—each bite tells a story. Your taste buds dance, and you embrace the local life.
Secret treasures like Atelier do Doce "Cake delights" and sunset views at the Story Tellers Hotel are just a few of the offerings in the area. Two years later, our plot of land has transformed into more than just walls and concrete. Our questionable DIY skills are now on full display, echoing with laughter (which we enjoy while trying to fix the wonky wall picture). Our holiday home on the Silver Coast is where dreams and reality collide in a comical dance, a true paradise found at this address... as long as you don't mind the occasional surprise visit from the local wildlife! 🌟🌊🌅😂
