Great way to spend your day at Obidos castle

Updated: Jan 29

Obidos' castle dates back to Portugal's Roman occupation, but its current layout is Moorish and the result of restorations and reconstructions from different Portuguese kings, starting in 1148. The main towers were built in 1375, and in addition to its military function, it also served as a royal palace.

Obidos is known for its Ginga, a cherry liqueur made of bing cherries. It is usually served in a dark chocolate cup to form the perfect combination for anyone with a sweet tooth. Make sure to grab one at the 1 Euro stalls on the main street! There are also several excellent family-run restaurants in Obidos.

The narrow old town center is less than half a mile long and only takes a few minutes to walk from one end to the other, although you'll probably want to stop at all the interesting spots along the way. You can easily explore Obidos within a couple hours, but you could also spend the entire day there. The walls are free to visit.

Walking the castle walls feels like an adventure. The walkway is narrow (roughly 1 meter wide) and there are no guardrails, so there is a drop off on one side of the walls, which sit quite high above town. When there is two-way traffic, this can be a bit unnerving. If you have an issue with heights or suffer from vertigo, consider skipping this walk on the castle walls.

On the way to Obidos Castle on our wedding anniversary.

Just the most perfect trip to the Castle that another couple where celebrating there wedding on this day.

It made us think about our day 12 years ago it was extra ordinary day full of love.

What to buy in Obidos Portugal?

Save some time for browsing through the shops and searching out thick woven fabrics, regional rugs (both hand- and machine-made), raffia and handmade bags, and local lace. We bought Sardines in the packaging form the year we were born at the Museu de Sardinha It is a beautiful store.

Óbidos is one of the most folkloric towns in Portugal; dozens of boutiques line the town's main street, Rua Direita.
