The best wave season in Nazaré is usually during winter, especially from October to March.
Why are Nazaré waves so big? Nazaré Canyon ends right by Nazaré's Praia do Norte (North Beach). At this point, the canyon's inbound water gets pushed upward as it hurtles toward the Portuguese shore. This wall of water combines with the surface-level wave—the two stack on top of each other, creating a double wave that is especially large.
We visited Nazare with our family during Christmas time. It was amazing to see the waves and watch the surfers battle with the sea.
We can't wait for the surf season to begin again and to see the brave ones ride the waves......
'Veado' surfer with a deer head statue at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, by sculptor Adália Alberto, Nazaré, Portugal
What is the story of the deer in Nazaré? The story goes that nobleman and mayor Dom Fuas Roupinho started chasing a deer in dense fog. His horse stopped just in time to avoid the two of them falling over a 100-metre-high cliff and Dom Fuas recognised the place. Ermida da Memória is built around a cave where he first saw an image of the Virgin Mary.
